Founded in 2021 by Gaurav Misra and Dwight Churchill, who first met at Boston mobile-analytics startup Localytics. Gaurav had led design engineering at Snap (Spotlight, Snap Map); Dwight came from launching Goldman Sachs Marcus. They saw short-form video exploding on TikTok but creation tools lagging, and launched Captions on iOS. In Sept 2025 the company rebranded as Mirage to reflect its expansion into AI video research and brand-facing Mirage Studio.
