Thinking Machines Lab was founded in February 2025 by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati along with John Schulman, Barret Zoph, Lilian Weng, Andrew Tulloch and Luke Metz, all of whom previously worked at OpenAI or other leading AI labs. The company is headquartered in San Francisco.
Meta recruited five founding team members away from TML, part of a broader AI talent war. One engineer was reportedly recruited at a $1.5B compensation package. One-third of the founding team has now left.
Two co-founders who had worked at OpenAI before helping launch TML departed in January 2026, contributing to reports that roughly one-third of the founding team has since exited.
Two co-founders left Thinking Machines Lab to return to OpenAI; Andrew Tulloch separately joined Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Tinker is a Python API for distributed fine-tuning of open-weight LLMs, with an accompanying open-source Tinker Cookbook (Apache 2.0).
The startup signed a lease for a 72,500-square-foot office at 2300 Harrison Street in San Francisco's Mission District.
Andreessen Horowitz led a record-breaking $2B seed round with participation from Nvidia, Accel, ServiceNow, Cisco, AMD and Jane Street.
Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati publicly launches her new AI lab with a team of OpenAI alumni.
