Founded in 2007 by Bryan Johnson in Chicago, IL. Braintree set out to simplify online payment processing for developers and merchants. It acquired Venmo in 2012 and was itself acquired by PayPal in 2013 for approximately $800 million.
Braintree introduced its Data Only feature leveraging 3D Secure data-capture to reduce unnecessary payment declines. Visa mandated all issuers to accept Data Only transactions starting April 2025, establishing it as a modern payment processing standard.
PayPal announced a partnership with Verifone in 2025, integrating Braintree to unify in-store and online payment experiences under the PayPal Open umbrella, expanding Braintree's global omnichannel coverage.
