Subject was founded in Los Angeles in October 2020 as Emile Learning by Felix Ruano (CEO), Michael Vilardo (COO), and Jon Quiros (former CTO). Ruano, the son of Mexican immigrants who attended Los Angeles public schools and later Harvard, had previously run a test prep business and worked as a consultant at McKinsey. Vilardo had worked at Uber and Nike before doing his MBA at UCLA, where the two met in 2019. The company rebranded from Emile Learning to Subject in 2022 alongside its Series A.
Subject introduced its Learning Intelligence platform, including an AI Teaching Assistant for educators and 24/7 AI tutoring and personalized support for students.
Felix Ruano and Michael Vilardo, co-founders of Subject, were named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2022 for education.
