Zola was founded in New York City in 2013 by Shan-Lyn Ma and Nobu Nakaguchi, who had previously worked together at Gilt Groupe on the Gilt Taste business unit. Ma, a Stanford MBA who had earlier worked at Yahoo, found that the registry sites used by friends getting married were clunky and out of date. The pair launched Zola as a modern, mobile-first universal registry and expanded it into a full wedding planning platform.
Zola launched two AI features in 2024: Split the Decisions, which helps couples divide wedding planning tasks, and an AI thank-you note generator in its mobile app.
Zola was recognized in Fast Company's 2024 Most Innovative Companies list, ranked No. 7 in North America in its category.
Zola disclosed it has helped more than two million couples plan their weddings, with a valuation reported above $600M.
Bessemer Venture Partners published a Wish I Knew interview with co-founder and CEO Shan-Lyn Ma discussing the founding and growth of Zola.
Zola announced a $100M Series D led by Comcast Ventures, with new investors NBCUniversal and Goldman Sachs Investment Partners and participation from Lightspeed, Canvas, Thrive, BBG Ventures, and Female Founders Fund.
