About

Volterra was a distributed cloud platform that integrated multi-cloud and edge environments into a single service mesh, giving enterprises and service providers a security-first, application-driven edge with global scale. It was acquired by F5 Networks in January 2021 and its technology became the foundation of F5 Distributed Cloud Services.

Volterra was founded in 2017 in Santa Clara, California by Ankur Singla, Ashish Ranjan, and Harshad Nakil. Singla had previously founded and led Contrail Systems, an SDN startup that was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2012. After two years operating in stealth, Volterra emerged in November 2019 with more than $50M in funding, 100+ engineers, and 30+ global customers. F5 Networks acquired the company in January 2021 for $500M, and its technology underpins F5 Distributed Cloud.
