Volterra was founded in 2017 in Santa Clara, California by Ankur Singla, Ashish Ranjan, and Harshad Nakil. Singla had previously founded and led Contrail Systems, an SDN startup that was acquired by Juniper Networks in 2012. After two years operating in stealth, Volterra emerged in November 2019 with more than $50M in funding, 100+ engineers, and 30+ global customers. F5 Networks acquired the company in January 2021 for $500M, and its technology underpins F5 Distributed Cloud.
F5 Networks closed its acquisition of Volterra for approximately $500M, including roughly $440M in cash and $60M in deferred consideration and assumed unvested incentive compensation. The deal forms the basis of F5's edge platform strategy.
VentureBeat analyzed F5's acquisition of Volterra as a strategic move in the emerging competition for distributed cloud and the network edge.
F5 Networks announced the acquisition of Volterra in an 8-K filing, framing the deal as the foundation for a security-first, app-driven edge platform for enterprises and service providers.
Volterra exited two years of stealth with more than $50M in funding from Khosla Ventures, Mayfield, M12, Itochu Technology Ventures, and Samsung NEXT, launching a distributed cloud platform for multi-cloud and edge environments.
