Creator of LLVM and Swift; former Tesla Autopilot head and Google VP; co-founded Modular in 2022 to unify AI infrastructure.
Modular provides a unified AI inference platform — MAX — that optimizes model serving across GPUs, CPUs, and ASICs from kernel to cloud. It also develops Mojo, a high-performance systems programming language designed to combine Python usability with C++ performance for AI workloads. The platform delivers 2x performance improvements over alternatives like vLLM through a single OpenAI-compatible API.

Modular was founded in 2022 by Chris Lattner (creator of Swift and LLVM, former Tesla Autopilot head) and Tim Davis after the two met at Google and grew frustrated with AI infrastructure fragmentation. They founded Modular in Silicon Valley to build a unified compute layer that would make AI model deployment hardware-agnostic and dramatically simpler.
On the day Google released Gemma 4 (April 2, 2026), Modular shipped optimized inference across NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for all four Gemma 4 variants, including multimodal support for text, images, and video.
Release adds support for FLUX.2 image generation with 4x speedup over prior art, and new Mojo language features for high-performance GPU kernel development.
Modular gained significant press coverage as one of the most promising AI infrastructure companies challenging NVIDIA dominance in model serving.
Modular raised $250M Series C led by the US Innovative Technology Fund at a $1.6B valuation, with participation from DFJ Growth, GV, General Catalyst, and Greylock.
Modular open-sourced the Modular Platform (including MAX and Mojo) on GitHub under the modular/modular repository, enabling community contributions.
Modular launched MAX, a high-performance AI serving framework providing 2x performance improvement over vLLM with an OpenAI-compatible API across GPUs and CPUs.
Modular raised $100M Series B at ~$600M valuation led by General Catalyst, with GV, Greylock, and others to expand AI infrastructure platform.
Modular released Mojo, a new systems programming language combining Python usability with C++ performance, targeting AI model development and hardware-agnostic deployment.
